Note: Yazd is in Central Īrān and bordered by the provinces of Khorāsān to the northeast, Kermān to the southeast, Fārs to the southwest and Eṣfahān to the northwest. Its ancient inhabitants were known as Sagartians or Asagarta. The nomadic Sagartians were loyal to Cyrus the Great, but after the death of Cambyses (522) they revolted against the Achaemenid empire under the leadership of Tritantaechmes. The city of Yazd is populated with the descendants of Zoroastrians who had fled the Muslim Arabs that conquered Îrān. The area is known for the production of silk textiles and the crops that are cultivated in the area around Yazd city include barley, wheat, cotton, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables. |
