Note: The area comprising the northwestern portion of Iran, Āzārbāijān was the center of several ancient cultures. In the 4th century BCE it was conquered by Alexander the Great and ruled by Atropates, a general in Alexander's army. The Persians regained control over the territory during the Sasanian dynasty in the 3rd century CE. After the fall of the Sassanian dynasty it was controlled by the Arabs from the 7th century to the 11th century CE. In the 13th century CE, it fell under Mongol rule and Āzārbāijān became the center of empire, which extended from Syria to Oxus river. In the 20th century, both the Turks and the Soviet Union gained control of the area, but by the end of World War II, Iranians had forced the Soviets to withdraw. |
