Note: City located on the Zorge River and next to the Harz Mountains in the fertile area known as the Goldene Aue. A royal castle was built in Nordhausen near an old Frankish settlement 927 CE. In 1802, it became part of Prussian Saxony until 1945 (except from 1807-1813, when it was part of Westphalia). On the outskirts of Nordhausen, the Nazis established a concentration camp of the same name (also called Dora-Mittelbau, or Dora-Nordhausen). The Nazis evacuated the camp in April 1945, before its liberation by the U.S., and forced the prisoners on a brutal "death march" to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. |
