Note: Village located near Weimar, known for being the site of the notorious Nazi concentration camp of the same name. Established in 1937, the Buchenwald camp initially housed political prisoners, but after Kristallnacht in 1938, over 10,000 Jews were sent to Buchenwald. Prisoners endured slave-labor, disease-ridden conditions, and medical experimentation. During its existence, the camp housed some 250,000 prisoners, at least 56,000 of whom were executed. Some 10,000 prisoners were sent to extermination camps. Before American troops arrived on April 11th, 1945 to liberate the camp, 28,500 prisoners had been evacuated and sent on a "death march" in which one in four died. However, over 21,000 prisoners had been left, and had seized control of the camp just prior to the Americans' arrival. |
