Note: Located in northern Estonia, Vaivara was the site of the largest Nazi concentration camp in Estonia. Established in 1943, the camp was both a transit-camp for Jews being sent to other labor camps, and a concentration camp, as it housed approximately 1,300 prisoners, mainly Jews. About 20,000 Jews passed through Vaivara during its existence, most of them from Latvia and Lithuania. The Nazis evacuated the Estonian camps as the Soviets approached, forcing the remaining prisoners on death marches, where many were killed. |
