Note: A local government region in western Scotland from 1975 to 1996; in 1996 it was abolished and administration passed to 12 unitary authorities. Its capital was Glasgow and it was comprised of the basin of River Clyde, islands of Mull, Jura, Islay and Arran. The area was taken by Vikings in the 9th century, by the English, and then given over to the Scots in 945. |
