Note: Esbjerg is a city in the county commune of Ribe in southwestern Jutland, Denmark, on the North Sea opposite Fanø Island. It was founded in 1868 when Denmark lost North Slesvig to Germany, in order to provide a new seaport for exporting Jutland's agricultural produce. The harbor was built and ready in 1874, after which the city grew quickly. It received its charter in 1899. Today it is Denmark's largest fishing port, and exports fish, dairy, and meat products. Denmark's National Marine and Fisheries School is located there. On the outskirts there is a cemetery for almost 300 Allied airmen shot down over Denmark in World War II. The 2004 population estimate was 72,500.
