Note: Site of North Africa's most extensive and best preserved Roman ruins. Timgad was an ancient city strategically important in defending Numidia. It flourished due to the fecund land of the surrounding region, then was destroyed by Berbers in the 7th century. Excavations uncovered the city in 1881. It is now designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
