Record Type: concept
button breakers (<textile fabricating tools and equipment>, textile working equipment, ... Furnishings and Equipment (hierarchy name))

Note: Mechanized devices, comprising a series of rollers equipped with wavy ridges or protruding knobs called buttons, designed to lessen the stiffness of and soften excess starch in textile materials. Originally designed to increase the pliability of silk goods, these devices can be used to soften many types of stiffened textile materials after they have been exposed to finishing and drying processes. As textile materials are passed through the rollers, friction exerted by the fabric prompts the rollers to rotate and expose the fabric's surface to the protruding buttons. In order to achieve the desired softness and pliability, fabrics can be passed through these devices multiple times if desired; the more a stiffened fabric comes into contact with this device's buttons, the softer the fabric's surface will be.
