Het proces of de serie processen bij planten waarbij chlorofyl lichtenergie absorbeert, waarna de planten de energie gebruiken voor de synthese van complexe organische verbindingen uit koolstofdioxide. Tegelijk oxideert water zodat er zuurstof ontstaat. Bij dieren betreft het vergelijkbare processen waarbij lichtenergie wordt omgezet in chemische energie voor biosynthese in bacteriƫn. Vaak worden hierbij alternatieve koolstofbronnen gebruikt en wordt er geen zuurstof opgewekt.
