Note: Any of a class of purple, red, orange and yellow pigments, including the carotenes, the xanthophylls, and fucoxanthin, found widely in plants and animals and are characterized by solubility in fats and oils. They provide the color of such things as carrots, bananas, corn, and crustaceans. Carotenoids are used in food coloring and in dyes applied to textiles. |

Dutch ..... Pigment uit een klasse paarse, rode, oranje en gele pigmenten, waaronder de carotenen, de xanthophylen en fucoxanthine, die op grote schaal voorkomen in planten en dieren en worden gekenmerkt door oplosbaarheid in vetten en oliën. Ze zorgen voor de kleur van bijvoorbeeld wortels, bananen, maïs en schaaldieren. Carotenoïden worden gebruikt als kleurstof in levensmiddelen en als verfstof voor textiel. |
