Note: The practice or sport of running horses in competitions of speed, in which the horse that finishes first is the winner; horses usually carry a rider astride or are pulling a conveyance with a driver. The sport is ancient, certainly predating its documentation in both four-hitch chariot and mounted (bareback) races held in the Olympic Games of Greece beginning ca. 700 BCE. |

Dutch ..... Het gebruik of de sport waarin men paarden laat rennen in een snelheidswedstrijd, waarbij het paard dat als eerste de finish bereikt, wint. De paarden dragen doorgaans een ruiter op hun rug, of trekken een voertuig met daarop de ruiter. Het is een zeer oude sport die zeker teruggaat tot nog voor de vroegste historische documentatie van paarden- en paardenwagenraces in de Olympische Spelen in Griekenland, die rond 700 v.Chr. begonnen. |
