Note: Thought to be the ancestor of living Hymenaea species. Copal deposited from these extinct trees is highly valued for varnish. It had an extensive range, from southern Mexico and northern South America to the African continent. Studies of morphology and DNA indicate that H. protera was more closely related to the only species of Hymenaea remaining in East Africa than it is to the numerous American species.

| Dutch ..... Naar wordt aangenomen de voorloper van de levende Hymenaea-soorten. Kopal dat afkomstig is van deze uitgestorven bomen is een zeer waardevol bestanddeel van vernis. De soort was wijd verspreid, van het zuiden van Mexico en het noorden van Zuid-Amerika tot het Afrikaanse continent. Onderzoek naar de morfologie en het DNA wijst erop dat H. protera nauwer verwant was aan de enig overgebleven Hymenaea-soort in Oost Afrika dan aan de talrijke Amerikaanse soorten. |
