Note: Species of hickory tree native to the United States; most abundant of the hickories and very long-lived, sometimes reaching 500 years in age. Used for hard, durable wood and for its bark to produce a color-fast dye, giving a dark yellow (cotton) to golden (wool) color using an alum mordant. With a chrome mordant, it will give a brass color to wool and cotton. |

Dutch ..... Boom uit het genus Carya die inheems is in de Verenigde Staten. De meest voorkomende soort uit dit genus. De boom leeft zeer lang en wordt soms wel 500 jaar oud. Men gebruikt de boom vanwege zijn harde, slijtvaste hout. Uit de schors wint men een kleurvaste kleurstof die met behulp van een bijtmiddel met aluin katoen donkergeel maakt en wol een goudkleur geeft. Met een bijtmiddel met chroom worden zowel wol als katoen koperkleurig. |
