Note: Species of tree found in the eastern half of North America from Canada to Alabama to the Mississippi River. Butternut timber is used for carving and furniture. The bark, root, leaf, and seed hulls are used for dyeing; with aluminum mordants, butternut hulls produce of colorfast brown on wool and a grayish-green on cotton. The colors can be darkened by the addition of ferrous sulfate. Butternut dye was used for the Confederate Army uniforms in the U.S. Civil War. |

Dutch ..... Boomsoort die voorkomt in de oostelijke helft van Noord-Amerika, van Canada tot Alabama en tot de rivier de Mississippi. Het hout van de boom gebruikt men voor houtsnijwerk en meubels. Uit de schors, wortels, bladeren en de schillen van de zaden wint men kleurstoffen. Met de kleurstof uit de schillen van de zaden en een bijtmiddel met aluminium kan men wol kleurvast bruin verven en katoen grijsgroen. De kleuren kan men donkerder maken door ijzersulfaat toe te voegen. Tijdens de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog gebruikte men de kleurstof uit grijze walnoten voor de uniformen van het leger van de zuidelijke staten. |
