cloisters (Christian religious building spaces, religious building spaces, ... Components (hierarchy name)) |
|
Note: Enclosed spaces composed of a garth and surrounding walkways, which are generally arcaded on the courtyard side and walled on the other. Cloisters are often found in Christian monastic building complexes, but may be found on university campuses or elsewhere. The term is used for such features in secular buildings only when closely resembling the monastic prototype. |
