Note: Style and culture of a Siouan-speaking Native American tribe originally living in coastal Texas and Mississippi. From the mid 1700s to mid 1800s, Biloxi bands dispersed into Tunica communities in under pressure from the Spanish, Americans, and the Republic of Texas. This community is federally recognized as the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, gaining recognition in 1981. Some Biloxi moved further west into Texas, joining with the Alabama-Coushatta. |
