Note: Species of medium-sized tree native to Indonesia, now also grown in Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, and Vietnam. The dried bud of was very important in the earliest spice trade and believed to be originally indigenous to the Moluccas (Spice Islands) of Indonesia. Strong of aroma and hot and pungent in taste, cloves are used to flavor many foods, particularly meats and bakery products; in Europe and the United States the spice is a characteristic flavoring in traditional Christmas holiday foods including wassail, pumpkin pie, fruit cake, and mincemeat. |

Dutch ..... Middelgrote boom die afkomstig is uit Indonesië (men denkt oorspronkelijk van de Molukken), maar tegenwoordig ook wordt gekweekt in Madagaskar, Zanzibar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India en Vietnam. De gedroogde knop was in het begin van de specerijenhandel zeer belangrijk. Kruidnagels hebben een sterk aroma en een hete en scherpe smaak. Men gebruikt ze voor het kruiden van een groot aantal voedingsmiddelen, met name vlees en bakkersproducten. In Europa en de Verenigde Staten is deze specerij een kenmerkend ingrediënt van traditionele dranken en gerechten die men in de kerstperiode consumeert, zoals glühwein, pompoentaart, vruchtencake en pasteien. |
