Note: Species of long-lived, woody, flowering plant; the most commonly known source of sandalwood. This species has been long valued, harvested, and cultivated for its fragrant wood and medicinal qualities of essential oil. Currently, the wild population is vulnerable to extinction; very few sizable trees exist, thus it is not currently much used for fine woodworking; harvest of new trees is viable only after 40 years.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 長壽、樹木茂密、會開花的植物屬名；是最為人所知的檀香木的來源。此種的樹木長久以來因為其具香氣的木材和精油的藥用特性而受到重視、採收和種植培育。就目前而言，野生的檀香樹已經瀕臨絕種；由於檀香樹並未廣泛運用於精緻的木工藝上，因此仍有極少數範圍廣大的檀香樹林；新生成的樹要等到四十年之後才能砍伐收成。 |
| Dutch ..... Langlevende, houtige, bloeiende plantensoort, de meest bekende bron van sandelhout. Deze soort wordt al lange tijd gewaardeerd, geoogst en gekweekt om zijn welriekende hout en geneeskrachtige eigenschappen van de etherische olie. Momenteel dreigt de wilde populatie uit te sterven. Er bestaan nog maar zeer weinig grote bomen, dus wordt de soort op dit moment nauwelijks gebruikt voor fijne houtbewerking. Het duurt veertig jaar voordat nieuwe bomen kunnen worden gekapt. |
