Note: Refers to the early phase (ca. 4800-4300 BCE) of the Neolithic Yangshao culture. It is named after a Neolithic village site near Xi'an in Shaanxi province. Banpo architecture already includes the traditional Chinese orientation of the entrance towards the south and the use of wooden roof support frames. Banpo was a major site for ceramic production; a kiln has been excavated. Vessels were usually shaped by hand but were sometimes coiled or formed in molds. Basins and bowls with contracted bases are typical vessel shapes. Vessels were decorated with impressions or with a black or grey slip and were burnished. Geometric patterns predominate; human masks are an unusual motif sometimes used. A series of about 20 different marks incised on the rims of vessels may be a primitive means of recording events.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 半坡文化為新石器時代仰韶文化的前期，約介於西元前4800年至西元前4300年之間，因位於陝西省西安市附近一個的新石器村落而得名。半坡建築已具典型中國建築雛型，出入口朝南，並使用木製框架支撐屋頂。半坡遺址為主要的產陶地，在該處曾挖出一個窯。容器多為手工製作，有時則採用泥條盤築法或模製法。窄底的盆、碗是為典型容器形狀。容器經打磨，上有壓印裝飾，或黑、灰色的條紋裝飾。主要花紋為幾何圖形，偶爾出現人面圖形。容器邊緣所刻劃的一系列約二十種記號，可能是原始的記事方式。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de vroege fase (circa 4800-4300 v. Chr.) van de neolithische Yangshao-cultuur. De cultuur is genoemd naar een neolithisch dorp in de omgeving van Xi'an in de provincie Shaanxi. In de Banpo-architectuur herkennen we reeds de traditionele naar het zuiden gerichte ingang en het gebruik van houten draagconstructies voor het dak. Banpo was een belangrijk keramiekcentrum. Zo is er een industriële oven opgegraven. Het vaatwerk werd doorgaans met de hand gevormd, maar soms ook wel uit rollen opgebouwd of in vormen gegoten. Typerende vormen voor deze periode zijn kommen met versmalde voet. Het vaatwerk werd gedecoreerd met gedrukte vormen of met zwarte of grijze engobe, en werden vervolgens gepolijst. Geometrische patronen overheersen, en in zeldzame gevallen is ook een menselijk masker als motief aangetroffen. Een reeks van circa 20 verschillende markeringen die op de randen van het vaatwerk zijn ingesneden, moet wellicht worden gezien als een primitieve wijze om gebeurtenissen vast te leggen. |
| Spanish ..... Refierese a la fase temprana (ca. 4800-4300 a.C) de la cultura neolítica de Yangshao. Se nombra después de un sitio neolítico de la aldea cerca de Xi'an en la provincia de Shaanxi. La arquitectura de Banpo incluye ya la orientación china tradicional de la entrada hacia el sur y del uso de los bastidores de madera de ayuda en la azotea. Banpo era un sitio importante para la producción de cerámica. Los recipientes fueron formados generalmente a mano pero eran a veces eran formados en moldes. Los recipientes fueron adornados con las impresiones de negro o gris y pulidos. Los patrones geométricos predominan; las máscaras humanas son un adorno inusual usado a veces. Una serie de cerca de 20 diversas marcas incididas en los bordes de recipientes puede ser los medios primitivos de registrar acontecimientos. |
