Note: Refers to one of the three major phases of the Gansu culture, dating from ca. 2000 to ca. 1800 BCE. It is named after a site east of Ledu in eastern Qinghai province that was excavated in 1921 to 1923 by the Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson. Machang-phase pottery was made of either red clay or sand-tempered red and grey clay; the most common forms are jars, bowls, and juglike vessels. Typical decorative motifs include four large circles, ringlets, spirals, anthropomorphic patterns, and woven and checked patterns. Much Machang pottery bears painted symbols; 139 different symbols have been identified so far. Some large jars have tops in the shapes of human heads; one notable vessel has a human figure with both male and female sexual organs and breasts. These figures were probably associated with shamanistic rituals. The best-preserved remains of Machang houses have been excavated in Majiawan in Yongjing.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 甘肅文化三個主要時期之一，介於西元前約2000年至西元前約1800年之間。瑞典考古學家約翰．貢納爾．安德森 (Johan Gunnar Andersson) 於1921年至1923年在靑海省東方的樂都縣東邊的馬廠發掘該遺址，故名。馬廠陶器由紅陶土或紅色、灰色夾砂陶土製成。最常見的形式為罐、碗，以及形似水罐的容器。典型裝飾圖形包括：四個大圓圈、小環圈、螺旋、擬人圖案、編織紋、格子紋等等。許多馬廠陶器都有塗繪符號，目前已辨識出一百三十九種符號。有些大罐頂端有蓋，做成人頭的形狀，還有一個特別的容器塑畫有兼具雙性生殖器與乳房的人物，這些圖形或許和巫術宗教儀式有關。保存最好的馬廠時期房舍遺址，則出土於永靖縣馬家灣。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een van de drie hoofdfasen van de Gansu-cultuur, die dateert uit circa 2000 tot circa 1800 v. Chr. De naam is ontleend aan een vindplaats ten oosten van Ledu, in het oosten van de provincie Qinghai, die van 1921 tot 1923 is uitgegraven door de Zweedse archeoloog Johan Gunnar Andersson. Aardewerk uit de Machang-fase werd vervaardigd uit rode klei of uit zandgetemperde rode en grijze klei; de meest voorkomende vormen zijn potten, kommen en kruikachtig vaatwerk. Typerende decoratiemotieven zijn vier grote cirkels, ringetjes, spiralen, antropomorfe patronen en weef- of blokpatronen. Machang-aardewerk is veelal voorzien van geschilderde symbolen; tot dusverre zijn er 139 verschillende symbolen geïdentificeerd. Sommige grote potten zijn voorzien van een deksel in de vorm van een menselijk hoofd, en op één opvallend vat is een menselijke figuur met zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke geslachtskenmerken en borsten afgebeeld. Dergelijke figuren kunnen waarschijnlijk in verband worden gebracht met sjamanistische rituelen. De best bewaarde resten van Machang-huizen zijn opgegraven in Majiawan, in Yongjing. |
