Note: Refers to one of the two main branches of Zen. Known as Tsao-tung in China, it was brought by Dogen from China to Japan in 1227. Unlike Rinzai, Soto teaches a form of silent seated meditation in which enlightenment is a gradual process. In his 'Shobo Genzo,' Dogen advocates a combination of seated meditation (zazen), daily labor, discipline, and the use of koans. Dogen also wrote the 'General Teaching for Seated Meditation' which describes the five stages of zazen, culminating in the realization of the individual's oneness with reality. Soto appealed to the lesser samurai and to peasant farmers as a method of self-control. Soto became more popular than Rinzai, in part because it incorporates Pure Land funeral practices.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 兩大禪宗流派之一。此派在中國稱為曹洞，於西元1227年由道元禪師自中國帶入日本。曹洞宗倡導透過靜坐冥想的過程逐漸悟道，此乃其與臨濟宗不同處。道元禪師在其著作《正法眼蔵（Shobo Genzo）》中，鼓吹靜坐冥想（坐禪）、日常勞動、紀律及運用公案（koans）的禪修方式。在另一本撰述「靜坐冥想教學（General Teaching for Seated Meditation）」中，他則描寫坐禪的五個層次，其最終為個人與外在世界合而為一的境界。曹洞宗所強調之自我控制最早只得到社會地位較低的日本武士與鄉野農夫的認同，其後卻較臨濟宗更為普遍，部分原因乃在曹洞宗融入了淨土的喪葬儀式。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een van de twee hoofdstromingen van het zenboeddhisme. Het stond in China bekend als Tsao-tung en werd vandaar door Dogen naar Japan gebracht in 1227. Anders dan Rinzai doceert Soto een vorm van stil en zittend mediteren waarbij verlichting een geleidelijk proces is. In zijn 'Shobogenzo' bepleit Dogen een combinatie van gezeten meditatie (zazen), dagelijkse arbeid, discipline en het gebruik van koans. Dogen schreef ook een praktische handleiding voor gezeten meditatie over de vijf fasen van de zazen, culminerend in de eenwording van werkelijkheid en individu. Soto sprak de lagere samoerai en de armere boeren aan als methode van zelfbeheersing. Soto is populairder geworden dan Rinzai, deels omdat het begrafenisvormen uit de Pure Land-traditie heeft overgenomen. |

Distinto a Rinzai, Soto enseña una forma de meditación sentada en silencio en la cual la meditación es un proceso gradual. En su "Shobo Genzo" Dogen apoya una combinación de meditación sentada (zazen), trabajo diario, disciplina y el uso de koans. Dogen también escribió la "Enseñanza General para la meditación sentada" que describe las cinco etapas de zazen, que culminan en la conciencia de la unidad del individuo con la realidad. Como método de autocontrol, Soto se convirtió en una ayuda útil para el samurai inferior y los granjeros del campo. Soto se volvió más popular que el Rinzai, en parte por que incorpora prácticas funerarias de la Tierra Pura. |
