|
Note: Refers to a style of Scandinavian art dating from the 11th century. The term is derived from the geological name for the sandstone beds around Oslo, Norway, which were apparently the source of stone for many carvings in this style, though the stone was often carved elsewhere. The style probably developed in Danish centers and spread broadly in Scandinavia, England, and Ireland. The style continues to employ the earlier Mammen animal motifs, with innovations influenced by Anglo-Saxon and Ottonian ornament. The style is often characterized by plant motifs with stems arranged in strict axiality and intertwining tendrils, and by compositional schemes that are asymmetrical and have an additive character.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een stijl in de Scandinavische kunst uit de 11de eeuw. De term is ontleend aan de geologische naam van de zandstenen bodemlagen rond Oslo, waar klaarblijkelijk het steen vandaan kwam dat werd gebruikt voor veel sculpturen in deze stijl, hoewel deze vaak elders werden vervaardigd. De stijl ontwikkelde zich waarschijnlijk in Deense centra en verspreidde zich over heel Scandinavië, Engeland en Ierland. De stijl maakte nog steeds gebruik van de vroegere dierenmotieven uit de Mammenstijl, met vernieuwingen die waren beïnvloed door Anglo-Saksische en Ottoonse ornamentiek. De stijl kenmerkt zich doorgaans door plantenmotieven waarbij de stengels in strikt axiale en dooreengevlochten strengen zijn gearrangeerd, en door compositorische, asymmetrische ontwerpen met een additief karakter. |
