Note: Refers to the style and period of the early Angkor empire associated with the rule of King Yashovarman I (889-900 CE). The style of this period is characterized by the prominence of religious temples as city centers and the embryonic development of the temple into five-tiered pyramid structures built of sandstone, surmounted by sandstone tower-sanctuaries in quincuncial arrangements, and featuring subsidiary shrines, libraries, galleries, and gopuras. Temples of this period also developed into complex structures whose design featured Indian-influenced chronological symbolism and seasonal cycles. Decorative arts and sculpture in the period exhibited the endeavors of Yashovarman I to represent his kingdom as a model of the cosmos and symbolic center of the world. Sanctioned artistic productions featured high relief sculptures of guardian figures and celestial beings and bas relief carvings of foliage swirls and jewel bands that surround figures of deities.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de stijl en periode van het vroege Angkor-rijk ten tijde van de heerschappij van koning Yashovarman I (889-900 n. Chr.). De stijl van deze periode wordt gekenmerkt door de grootschalige aanwezigheid van religieuze tempels als stadscentra en de vroege ontwikkeling van de tempel als een vijflagige piramidestructuur van zandsteen, met kruislings gerangschikte zandstenen torens en met heiligdommen, bibliotheken, galerijen en gopura's. Tempels uit deze periode waren complexe structuren waarvan het ontwerp werd gekenmerkt door Indiase invloeden met chronologisch symbolisme en seizoenscycli. In de decoratieve kunst en beeldhouwwerken uit deze periode is terug te zien hoe Yashovarman I probeerde zijn koninkrijk af te beelden als model voor de kosmos en het symbolische middelpunt van de wereld. De goedgekeurde artistieke werken uit deze periode kenmerken zich door hoge reliëfwerken van beschermfiguren en hemelse wezens en bas-reliëfs van gebladerte en sieraden rondom figuren van godheden. |
