Note: Refers to a regional school of Pahari miniature painting associated with the large Chamba state of the Punjab Hills. Chamba's cultural heritage is well-preserved due to the state's sheltered location. The presence of outside artists is felt throughout the history of Chamba painting. Paintings of the second half of the 17th century are naturalistic with a preference for pale colors, a distinctive rendering of hands, and characteristic slim wrists. In the 17th century, elements of Basohli painting are incorporated into Chamba painting with richer, warmer colors and more stylized and decorative depictions of trees. While some Chamba painting became increasingly influenced by the Basohli school in the early 18th century, other contemporary paintings are done in much more indigenous style. The presence of artists from Jammu is also felt in the early 18th century, most noticeably in the rectangular and squarish facial types. Other influences came from Mughal and Guler painting. The especially influential Guler artists arrived in Chamba circa 1770, bringing with them their poetic and expressive style as well as a preference for romantic subject matter. Painting continued in later centuries, but was more fractured in style.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een regionale school van Pahari-miniatuurschilderkunst die wordt geassocieerd met de grote staat Chamba in het heuvelgebied van Punjab. Het culturele erfgoed van Chamba is goed bewaard gebleven, een gevolg van de natuurlijk beschermde ligging van de staat. Door de gehele geschiedenis van de Chamba-schilderkunst heen hebben buitenlandse schilders er hun stempel op gedrukt. De schilderijen uit de tweede helft van de 17de eeuw zijn naturalistisch van aard, met een voorkeur voor lichte kleuren, een bijzondere weergave van de handen, en opvallend smalle polsen. In de 17de eeuw werden elementen uit de Basohli-schilderkunst geïntegreerd in de Chamba-schilderkunst, hetgeen leidde tot een warmer kleurgebruik en een meer gestileerde en decoratieve weergave van bomen. Aan het begin van de 18de eeuw kwamen sommige Chamba-schilders steeds meer onder invloed van de Basohli-kunst te staan, maar andere werken uit deze periode zijn in een overwegend inheemse stijl uitgevoerd. De aanwezigheid van kunstenaars uit Jamma wordt eveneens merkbaar aan het begin van de 18de eeuw, vooral in de gezichtstypen, die rechthoekiger van vorm worden. Andere invloeden zijn afkomstig uit de Mogol- en Guler-schilderkunst. Guler-kunstenaars, die vooral een grote invloed hebben gehad, trokken vanaf circa 1770 naar Chamba en brachten hun poëtische en expressieve stijl mee, alsmede een voorkeur voor romantische thema's. De Chamba-schilderstijl heeft zich ook in de eeuwen daarna weten te handhaven, maar in een verbrokkelde vorm. |

La herencia cultural de Chamba está bien conservada debido a la localización protegida por el estado. La presencia de artistas foráneos se siente a lo largo de toda la historia de la pintura de Chamba. Pinturas de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII son naturalistas con una preferencia por los colores pálidos, una distintiva interpretación de manos y característica muñecas delgadas. En el siglo XVII, los elementos de la pintura Basohli son incorporados a la pintura Chamba con los colores más ricos, más cálidos y representaciones de árboles más estilizadas y decorativas.
