Note: Refers to a regional school of Pahari miniature painting associated with Bilaspur in the Sutlej River valley of the Punjab Hills. Bilaspur was a noteworthy painting center from about 1650 to 1870. The 17th-century ruler Dip Chand served the Mughals and had marital ties that may have motivated him to establish a painting workshop. Unlike the local sculpture of the 17th century, most early Bilaspur paintings are not religious. Instead, most are portraits, and they are indebted to Mughal painting for their naturalism. Later Bilaspur painting retains the refinement of the Mughal influence but the subject matter is more commonly traditional subjects such as 'Ragamala' illustrations and devotional works. By the end of the 18th century, outside influences from Guler and Kangra dominated Bilaspur painting and in the first few decades of the next century, the style showed little connection to its origins and declined.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een regionale school van Pahari-miniatuurschilderkunst die wordt geassocieerd met Bilaspur, in de vallei van de rivier de Sutlej, in het heuvelgebied van Punjab. Vanaf circa 1650 tot 1870 was Bilaspur een belangrijk centrum voor de schilderkunst. De 17de-eeuwse heerser Dip Chand diende de Mogols, en huwelijksbanden hebben hem er mogelijk toe aangezet een schildersatelier op te zetten. In tegenstelling tot het lokale beeldhouwwerk van de 17de eeuw heeft het merendeel van de vroege Bilaspur-schilderkunst geen religieus thema. Het betreft meestal portretten met een naturalistisch karakter, iets waarvoor ze schatplichtig zijn aan de Mogols. In de Bilaspur-schilderkunst van latere datum is het verfijnde karakter van de Mogol-invloeden behouden gebleven, maar de themakeuze is verschoven naar meer algemene traditionele onderwerpen als illustraties van de 'Ragamala' en devotiewerken. Aan het eind van de 18de eeuw werd de schilderkunst van Bilaspur overheerst door buitenlandse invloeden uit Guler en Kangra, en in de eerste decennia van de 19de eeuw was er nog nauwelijks iets van het oorspronkelijke karakter bewaard gebleven, waardoor de stijl in verval raakte. |
