Note: Chinese clapperless bells, usually of bronze; includes bells used as percussion instruments in ancient China, such as those famously produced during the late Zhou dynasty (ca. 600-255 BCE). The term also denotes the religious bells used daily in Buddhist temples. Made of clay in Neolithic times, the zhong was crafted in bronze during the Shang dynasty (ca. 1600-1066 BCE). In performance the early zhong was either held by hand or placed on a base with its mouth upward and struck with a mallet. |

Dutch ..... Chinese klokken zonder klepel, meestal van brons. Het kan ook klokken betreffen die in het oude China als slagwerkinstrumenten werden gebruikt, zoals de beroemde klokken die tijdens de late Zhou-dynastie zijn gemaakt (ca. 600-255 v. Chr.). De term verwijst ook naar de religieuze klokken die dagelijks in boeddhistische tempels worden gebruikt. In het neolithicum werden deze klokken van klei gemaakt, en tijdens de Shang-dynastie (ca. 1600-1066 v. Chr.) van brons. Tijdens voorstellingen werden ze vroeger met de hand vastgehouden of op een voetstuk geplaatst met de mond naar boven, en werd er met een hamer op geslagen.
