Note: On the geologic time scale the second epoch of the Tertiary period of the Cenozoic era, or the second of the more recently designated Paleogene. It extends from about 55 to 34 million years ago and is marked by warm climate, the proliferation of many modern groups of organisms, especially mammalian families and molluscs, and the emergence of what is now the Himalayan range.
