Note: In the geologic time scale, the third period of the Paleozoic Era. It began 443.4 million years ago and ended 419.2 million years ago, following the Ordovician Period and preceding the Devonian Period. It is characterized by a rise in sea levels and a proliferation of fish species. Vascular plants colonized coastal lowlands but continental interiors were mostly devoid of life. |

Deze tijd werd gekenmerkt door een stijging van het zeeniveau en een sterke groei van het aantal vissoorten. Vaatplanten koloniseerden de lage kustvlakten, maar verder landinwaarts bleven de continenten grotendeels levenloos. |
