Note: Family containing two genera of scale insects found on cacti; abdomen not narrowed posteriorly; wax gland openings on dorsum; anal ring absent; wax gland ducts minute, arising from centre of cluster of sessile pores; setae stout and cut off at end. Molecular data suggest that cochineal scales are really just specialized eriococcids (Gullan and Cook 2001). These insects have been transported to all parts of the world as a potential source of red dyes, but are apparently endemic to the New World. Most occur in desert areas of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and central and South America. The true conchineal, D. coccus has been used as a source of red dyes for several centuries.

| Dutch ..... Familie van twee genera schildinsecten die op cactussen voorkomen. Het achterlijf is aan de achterzijde niet versmald. Op de rug bevinden zich wasklieropeningen. Een anale ring ontbreekt. De wasklierkanaaltjes zijn zeer klein en ontspringen uit het midden van een groepje sessiele poriën. De setae zijn stevig en afgesneden aan het uiteinde. Moleculaire gegevens duiden erop dat schildluisschilden feitelijk gespecialiseerde eriococcidae zijn (Gullan & Cook 2001). Deze insecten zijn naar alle delen van de wereld getransporteerd als potentiële bron van rode kleurstoffen, maar lijken inheems te zijn in de Nieuwe Wereld. Ze komen daar overwegend voor in de woestijngebieden van het zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten, in Mexico en in Midden- en Zuid-Amerika. De cochenilleluis D. coccus wordt al enkele eeuwen gebruikt als bron voor rode kleurstoffen. |
