Note: Artisan or merchant class of people that lived in urban areas and are associated with the production of much of the art, music, literature and drama in Japan during the Edo period (1615-1868). This class includes both wealthy financiers and wholesale merchants as well as low income artisans, peddlers, and day laborers. The term is often translated as "townspeople" or "townsmen". |

Dutch ..... Klasse van ambachts- of kooplieden die leefden in stedelijke gebieden en worden geassocieerd met de productie van een groot gedeelte van de kunst, muziek, literatuur en drama in Japan tijdens de Edo-periode (1615-1868). Deze klasse omvat zowel rijke financiers en groothandelaars als arme ambachtslieden, venters en dagloners. De term wordt vaak vertaald als 'stadsmensen' of 'stedelingen'. |
