Note: Species of thick-skinned, herbivorous, even-toed hoofed mammals, significantly smaller than the common hippopotamus, native to the forests and swamps of western Africa; thought to be the only surviving species of their genus, as the Malagasy pigmy hippopotamus is presumed extinct.

| Dutch ..... Dikhuidige, plantenetende eventenige hoefzoogdieren, aanzienlijk kleiner dan het gewone nijlpaard. Ze zijn inheems in de bossen en moerassen van westelijk Afrika. Verondersteld wordt dat ze de enige nog levende soort van hun genus zijn, aangezien van het pygmeenijlpaard van Madagaskar wordt verondersteld dat het uitgestorven is. |
