Note: Refers to a system of projection generally used in cartography and named for Gerardus Mercator, who introduced this projection on a map in 1569. It is generally classified as a cylindrical projection, even though it is actually derived mathematically. It is characterized by having parallels of latitude represented as straight horizontal lines and meridians of longitude represented as vertical straight lines at right angles to the equator. It is often used for navigation charts because any straight line is a line of true bearing that allows navigators to plot a straight-line course; it often considered impractical for world maps because the scale is distorted and areas farther away from the equator appear disproportionately large.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 地理學家傑哈德斯．麥卡托發明的投影方法，為常見的製圖法，麥卡托在西元1569年首先在製作地圖時使用此種投影法。雖然麥卡托投影是用數學計算而成，一般仍將此歸類為圓柱投影。其特色在於投影出來的圖上，緯線是水平直線，而經線是與赤道垂直的垂直線。常用來製作航海圖，領航員如要規畫直行航線，圖上任一條直線都可以用來指引方向。不過，以麥卡托投影法製作的世界地圖並不實用，不僅比例變形失真，而且離赤道越遠的地區在圖上看起來會特別大，不符合實際比例。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een projectiesysteem dat doorgaans wordt gebruikt in de cartografie en is genoemd naar Gerardus Mercator, die deze projectie voor het eerst gebruikte voor een kaart uit 1569. Mercatorprojectie wordt doorgaans aangemerkt als een cilinderprojectie, hoewel het in feite om een wiskundige afleiding gaat. Zij wordt gekenmerkt door rechte, horizontale parallellen en rechte, verticale meridianen in rechte hoeken op de evenaar. Het systeem wordt vaak gebruikt voor navigatiekaarten, omdat elke rechte lijn in de juiste richting loopt aan de hand waarvan navigatoren een rechte koers kunnen uitzetten; voor wereldkaarten wordt het als onpraktisch gezien omdat de schaal vervormd is en gebieden die zich op grotere afstand van de evenaar bevinden buitenproportioneel groot worden weergegeven. |

Refiere a un sistema de la proyección usado en cartografía y nombrado generalmente como Mercator, su implementación fue elaborada por Gerardus Mercator, que introdujo esta proyección en un mapa en 1569. Se clasifica generalmente como proyección cilíndrica, aun cuando se trabaja matemáticamente. Es caracterizado por paralelos de latitud representados como lineas horizontales rectas y los meridianos representados como líneas rectas verticales perpendicularmente al ecuador. Es de uso frecuente para las cartas de la navegación porque cualquier línea recta es una línea que permite que los navegadores tracen un curso; a menudo se considera impráctico para los mapas del mundo porque se tuerce la escala y las áreas que se encuentran alejadas del ecuador aparecen desproporcionadamente mayores. |
