Note: Semiprecious stone composed of dark green chalcedony with flecks of red jasper that were thought to resemble drops of blood. Bloodstones, when submerged in water, give a reddish reflection. They were occasionally used in ancient times as cylinder seals, during the Middle Ages for sculptures representing the flagellation of Christ, and currently as gemstones in jewelry. |
