Note: A style of art in India developed by Abanindranath Tagore and his followers in the early 20th century that remained popular until the 1920s. Inspired by Mughal miniatures and Japanese ink wash painting, the Bengal school was created in response to European academic teaching as a way to revive Indian traditions and create a national art. Although the school of painting started in Bengal, assisted by followers of Tagore, it soon spread across India to become a national style by the early 1900s. |

Dutch ..... Een kunstbeweging die tijdens de Britse periode in Bengalen, Brits-Indië ontstond. De Bengaalse school was een antwoord op Westerse intellectuele kunstscholen. Opgericht door onder meer Abanindranath Tagore, avanceerde de Bengaalse school snel tot een nationale Indiase kunststijl die tot in de jaren twintig van het twintigste eeuw populair bleef. Er werden vaak motieven geschilderd die in verband stonden met Indiase cultuur, geschiedenis en spiritualiteit. De gebruikte technieken werden geïnspireerd door de miniatuurschildertechniek van de Mogols en het Japanse schilderen in gewassen inkt. |
