Note: One of the largest family of marine bivalve mollusks comprised of over 200 species. The two valves of the shell are symmetrical, and range in colour from brown to red or yellow. The outer shell surface of many species can be smooth; others have ridges that radiate from the hinge area between the shells. |

Dutch ..... Een van de grootste families in zee levende, tweekleppige weekdieren, met meer dan 200 soorten. De twee kleppen van de schelp van deze dieren zijn symmetrisch en bruin tot rood of geel van kleur. De buitenkant van de schelp is bij veel soorten glad; bij andere is deze bedekt met richels die uitlopen vanaf het scharnier van de schelp. |
