Note: Knotted string recording devices used in the Inca empire and its predecessor societies in the Andean region. The term "khipu" is an orthographic rendering of the Quechua word for knot. A khipu typically consists of colored cotton or alpaca cords or strings; arranged with a main cord to which are attached a variable number of pendant strings. Pendant strings may bear further subsidiary strings. On most khipus there are three types of knots. It is believed that khipus were used to record numeric values for tributes, censuses, and the like; according to contemporaneous European accounts, the khipus were also used as mnemonic devices representing cultural histories and tales.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指安帝斯山脈一帶，印加帝國及其前身社會所使用的紀錄工具。「奇普」一詞在蓋丘亞語（ Quechua ）字彙拼字中代表繩結的意思。奇普通常為染色的棉（或是羊馱呢）製的繩線，上面打的繩結代表了可能以十進位系統編碼的數值。奇普通常有一條主繩或主線，其上綁了多條副線，副線可有2條或多達1500條。副線上面可能又會綁上附屬的棉線。多數奇普上都有三種繩結，目前其用法尚未被破解，有許多理論研究其紀錄的資訊。最近的研究認為這是一種統計勞動貢獻的記錄方法，包括不同地區所貢獻的勞力。其他的研究者相信奇普的功能並非書寫系統，而是記憶系統，用來提示印加行政人員，也可能其功能結合了這兩種紀錄的形式。奇普的製作與保管不僅限於印加帝國首都庫斯科的高級官員，地區的指揮官及村落的首長都會使用。十六世紀西班牙征服者征服印加帝國之後，此種工具不是被禁止使用就是遭到摧毀，現今只有約600個奇普流傳下來。秘魯的高地地區則保留了奇普的原始用法。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar registratiesystemen die werden gebruikt in het Incarijk en oudere culturen in het Andesgebied. De term 'khipu' is een orthografische weergave van het Quechua-woord voor knoop. Een khipu bestaat meestal uit koorden of draden van gekleurd katoen (of alpaca) met numerieke waarden die mogelijk met knopen zijn gecodeerd volgens het tientallig (decimaal) systeem. Khipu's bestaan uit een hoofdkoord waaraan een wisselend aantal hangende touwtjes is bevestigd; het aantal touwtjes kan uiteenlopen van twee tot bijna 1500 snoeren. Aan deze touwtjes kunnen op hun beurt ook weer kleinere touwtjes zijn bevestigd. De meeste khipu's bevatten drie soorten knopen. Het geheim van de khipu is nog niet ontcijferd en er zijn tal van theorieën over de hoeveelheid informatie die ze zouden bevatten. Volgens recente theorieën werden ze gebruikt om eenheden van arbeidsbijdragen bij te houden, met een verwijzing naar het geografische gebied dat de arbeid leverde. Andere onderzoekers zijn van mening dat khipu's niet als schriftvorm waren bedoeld, maar als een systeem van geheugensteuntjes voor Inca-administrateurs, of als een combinatie van deze twee, voor het bijhouden van een administratie. Khipu's werden niet alleen door hoge ambtenaren in de hoofdstad Cuzco gemaakt en bijgehouden, maar ook door regionale hoofden en dorpsoudsten. Na de verovering van het Incarijk begin 16de eeuw door de Spaanse conquistadores werd het gebruik van de khipu verboden en werden de meeste vernietigd. Er zijn nog slechts circa 600 Inca-khipu's bewaard gebleven. In de hooglanden van Peru wordt het gebruik van de khipu nog voortgezet, zij het in een vrij primitieve vorm. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a un elemento de registro usado en el Imperio Inca y sus sociedades predecesoras en la región de los Andes. El término kipu es una traducción ortográfica del término quechua para nudo. Un kipu consiste generalmente en cuerdas o cintas de algodón coloreadas con valores numéricos quizás codificados por los nudos basados en un sistema decimal. Los kipus están compuestos de una cuerda principal o matriz, a la cual se le adosa un número variable de las llamadas cuerdas pendientes; en algunos se pueden encontrar hasta 1.500 cuerdas pendientes, las que también pueden tener cuerdas auxiliares. En la mayoría de los kipus hay tres tipos de nudos. El kipu hasta ahora no ha sido descifrado y hay tantas teorías como la información que contienen. Algunos creen que más que información numérica y estadística se registra también una información narrativa. Si los kipus son una forma de lenguaje escrito como algunos sostienen, esto puede ser especialmente notable al no haber sobrevivido registro del lenguaje escrito inca, una rareza para esta una civilización avanzada. Otros investigadores creen que los kipus no funcionaban como sistema de escritura, sino como un sistema de nemotécnicas, sirviendo de apunte a los administradores incas. Quizás funcionaba como una combinación de las dos formas de guardar registro. Los kipus fueron creados y mantenidos no sólo por altos oficiales en la capita de Cuzco sino también por los comandantes regionales y jefes de pueblos. Después de comienzos del siglo XVI los Incas fueron conquistados por los españoles, el uso del kipu fue suspendido y la mayoría destruido. Sólo alrededor de 600 kipus sobreviven hoy. Usos más primitivos del kipu han continuado en la sierra del Perú. |
