Note: A fine-grained red, reddish-brown, and gray sandstone from Seneca Creek, Maryland; it contains coarse- to fine-grained angular quartz as well as some feldspar and mica fragments. It is fairly easy to carve but darkens and hardens when exposed to air, making it one of the most durable building stones. Seneca sandstone was extremely popular in Washington, D.C. during the 'brownstone era' of about 1840 to 1880; the original Smithsonian Institution building, for example, is made of Seneca sandstone. |

Chinese (traditional) ..... 一種顆粒細緻,呈紅色、紅棕及灰色的砂岩,產自馬里蘭州的塞尼卡溪(Seneca Creek)。含有粗粒至細粒之尖角石英,此外也含有長石和雲母碎片。雖然易於雕鑿,但暴露在空氣中顏色會變暗及硬化,故成為最耐久的建築用石之一。西元約1840年至1880年間為「褐石時代(brownstone era)」,當時塞尼卡砂岩在美國首府華盛頓地區極為流行,如史密生機構(Smithsonian Institution)最早期的建築即是以塞尼卡砂岩建造。 |
Dutch ..... Een fijnkorrelige, rode, roodachtig-bruine en grijze zandsteen uit Seneca Creek, Maryland. Dit materiaal bevat ruw- tot fijnkorrelig hoekig kwarts, en enkele fragmenten van veldspaat en mica. Deze zandsteen is tamelijk eenvoudig te bewerken, maar wordt donker en hard als hij wordt blootgesteld aan lucht, waardoor het een van de meest duurzame bouwstenen is. Seneca-zandsteen was zeer populair in Washington D.C. tijdens het 'tijdperk van de bruinrode zandsteen' van circa 1840 tot 1880; het oorspronkelijke gebouw van de Smithsonian Institution is bijvoorbeeld gemaakt van Seneca-zandsteen. |
Spanish ..... Arenisca de grano fino de color rojo, marrón-rojizo y gris proveniente de Seneca Creek, Maryland. Contiene cuarzo angular grueso a fino, y también algunos fragmentos de mica y feldespatos. Es bastante fácil de tallar, pero se oscurece y se vuelve más dura cuando se expone al aire, convirtiéndose en uno de los materiales de construcción más durables. La arenisca de Seneca fue extremadamente popular en Washington, D.C. durante la "era brownstone", aproximadamente de 1840 a 1880. El edificio original de la Smithsonian Institution, por ejemplo, está construido con arenisca de Seneca.
