Learn about the photographic treasures held in the special collections of the Research Library at the Getty Research Institute from curator Frances Terpak.
Terpak will introduce you to highlights of the Research Institute's vast and varied photographic collection, which ranges from 19th-century stereographs of ancient monuments to unique archives amassed in the 20th century by renowned scholars and dealers such as Beaumont Newhall and Harry Lunn, who worked in the art market and the history of photography.
She will also discuss how photographs can transcend the status of art object to serve as source documents for the study of our increasingly visual culture.
About Frances Terpak
Frances Terpak is senior collections curator at the Research Library at the Getty Research Insitute and a specialist in the emerging fields of visual culture and visual studies. She curated the popular exhibition Devices of Wonder: From the World in a Box to Images on a Screen and co-authored the accompanying catalogue.
