Bernard Rudofsky (1905–1988) designed radically innovative exhibitions, books, structures, and even shoes. This program, presented in conjunction with the Getty Research Institute exhibition Lessons from Bernard Rudofsky (March 11–June 8, 2008), uses provocative quotations from Rudofsky's writings as a jumping-off point for a conversation about fashion, comfort, sensuality, architectural vernacular, and curating of exhibitions.

Speakers:

• Valerie Steele, historian of fashion, director of the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum in New York, and author of Women of Fashion and Corset: A Cultural History
• Steven Ehrlich, a Los Angeles architect whose work is influenced by Rudofsky's writing and by the indigenous vernacular architecture of North and West Africa
• Dennis Comeau, footwear designer and co-owner of Bernardo Shoes, the company founded by Rudofsky in 1947 to create sandals that would transcend conventionality and ever-changing fashions
• Andrew L. Da Lio, plastic surgeon and associate professor in the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine

Moderator:

• Wim de Wit, Head of Special Collections & Visual Resources at the Getty Research Institute and an architectural historian specializing in modernism and architectural drawings
