Positions of Power: Courtesans and the History of Europe (Gallery Course)

Course Fee: $50, students/seniors $25 (course fee includes lunch). Open to 120 participants.

In celebration of the Los Angeles Opera's new production of Giuseppe Verdi's classic La Traviata, this daylong course looks at courtesans in, on, and around art history. The day includes lectures, tours, discussion, and a gourmet box lunch to enjoy outdoors on the Getty Center grounds.

Course Program

9:45–10:15 a.m.		Coffee and Registration

10:15–10:30 a.m.		Welcome and Introduction

10:30–11:05 a.m.		La Traviata in Context Learn more about the history and meaning of this opera and its noble but doomed courtesan protagonist from Mitchell Morris, professor of musicology at UCLA.

11:05–11:35 a.m.		Sex and the (Renaissance) City Explore the fascinating sexual landscape of Renaissance Florence with Jeremy Glastein, Getty Museum educator.

11:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.		Gallery Tours

12:30–1:30 p.m.		Lunch Box lunches are included in the course fee and can be picked up outside the Museum Lecture Hall.

1:30–2:00 p.m.		Gilding the Nest Witness how the taste of Madame de Pompadour, the first official mistress of King Louis XV, helped shape the Rococo style of 18th-century French decorative arts.

2:00–3:00 p.m.		Excerpts from La Traviata Enjoy highlights of the opera performed by Daniel Montenegro (tenor), Maria Fortuna (soprano), and Victoria Kirsch (piano).

3:00 p.m.		Concluding Remarks
