Date: Thursday, June 28, 2007
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Join us for a special preview screening of Goya's Ghosts (2007, 114 mins., Rated "R"), a sweeping historical epic told through the eyes of celebrated Spanish painter Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) and directed by Academy Award-winning director Milos Forman (Amadeus). The film will be introduced by Selma Holo, professor of art history at USC, and followed by a Q&A with Holo, executive producer Paul Zaentz, and actor Randy Quaid. This is the film's first screening in Los Angeles.

Set against a backdrop of political turmoil at the end of the Spanish Inquisition and the start of Napoleon's invasion of Spain, the historical drama stars Javier Bardem (The Sea Inside), Natalie Portman (Garden State), and Stellan Skarsgård (Breaking the Waves). Randy Quaid (Brokeback Mountain) also stars as King Carlos IV of Spain.

In the film, Javier Bardem plays Brother Lorenzo—an enigmatic, cunning member of the Inquisition's inner circle—who becomes infatuated with Ines (Natalie Portman), Goya's teenage muse who is falsely accused of heresy and sent to prison. Stellan Skarsgård plays Francisco Goya, the celebrated painter renowned for both his colorful court paintings and his grim depictions of the brutality of war and life in Spain.

Prior to the film, stop by the second floor of the West Pavilion and visit Goya's Portrait of the Marquesa de Santiago and Bullfight, Surete de Varas. Museum educators will be on hand from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to answer all your questions.
