Édouard Manet was a titanic figure in the development of modern art. Daring and controversial, he broke with genteel conventions, capturing the spectacle of the boulevard, café, and racetrack and shocking the Parisian public with his frank treatment of the female nude. Yet who was Manet really, and why should his art continue to fascinate? Adam Gopnik explains how and why he came to love Manet and provides an evocative and personal exploration of the artist's work.
The lecture complements the exhibition Manet's Bar at the Folies-Bergère (June 5–September 9), which features and explores one of Manet's greatest and most enigmatic paintings.
About Adam Gopnik
Raised in Montreal, at home in New York, Adam Gopnik is an acclaimed essayist and arts writer for The New Yorker magazine. From 1995 to 2000 he lived in Paris and wrote The New Yorker's "Paris Journals," which feature commentaries on French society and on life as an American in Paris. He is the author of Through the Children's Gate: At Home in New York, Paris to the Moon, and The King in the Window and editor of Americans in Paris: A Literary Anthology.
