With his celebrated trilogy of tragedies by Greek playwright Euripides (485–406 B.C.), screened at the inaugural film series at the Getty Villa in June, Greek director Michael Cacoyannis demonstrated the power of ancient drama to speak to contemporary audiences. Now Cacoyannis brings Lysistrata, the great anti-war comedy of Euripides' contemporary and rival Aristophanes (448–380 B.C.), to the stage at the Getty Villa with Cabaret Lysistrata.

Cacoyannis creates an irreverent, cabaret version of the original play—complete with song, burlesque humor, and a TV news backdrop—that nonetheless retains the power of Aristophanes' plea for peace. The play tells the classic story of a sex strike staged by Greek officers' wives to force their husbands to put a halt to the disastrous Peloponnesian War. In a daring and hilarious two-person interpretation, Maia Morgenstern (Orient Express, The Passion of the Christ) plays all the female roles, while Vladimir Ivanov undertakes all the male roles.

Cabaret Lysistrata was first performed in Athens in 2005. This is its U.S. premiere.
