In the 17th century, European prints were shipped en masse across the Atlantic to colonial Latin America, where local artists were tasked with copying their compositions to craft objects in diverse media. Art historian Aaron Hyman, of John Hopkins University, traces the journey of a single printed composition by Peter Paul Rubens that has long puzzled scholars, and explains how a study of objects derived from the print in Latin America allows for its thorough reappraisal.

This talk complements the exhibition Artists on the Move: Journeys and Drawings.
