GETTY CENTER

Harold M. Williams Auditorium

This is a past event

Renowned classicist Mary Beard goes on the hunt for Roman emperors in art since the Renaissance—from misidentified portraits to lost masterpieces, and from wallpaper to costly images of power. One of the works she examines is the Getty's painting The Age of Augustus, The Birth of Christ (ca. 1853) by Jean-Léon Gérôme. Beard is professor of classics at the University of Cambridge, the author of numerous award-winning and best-selling books about the ancient world, and a frequent host on the BBC. She is also a recipient of the 2019 J. Paul Getty Medal.

Mary Beard's recent book How Do We Look:The Body, the Divine, and the Question of Civilization will be available for purchase before and after her talk.
