WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Public Programming Postponed through Aug. 31

Protecting the health and safety of our community and visitors through the ongoing public health crisis remains our highest priority. To that end, public programs and special events at the Center and Villa will now be postponed through August 31. Our public programs and events require advance planning and notice that is not possible to predict at this time.

As you know, the Center and Villa closed to the public on March 14 until further notice. We will follow the direction of public health officials regarding the eventual reopening of our sites to both employees and the public, and we have begun preparations to safely reopen and welcome visitors once it is clear we can do so. The exhibition and public programming calendars of the Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute are currently being evaluated. When future details are known about reopening to employees, to visitors, and reinstating public programming, we will make an announcement.

Face Coverings Required on Site

In addition to obtaining advance permission before arriving on site, staff coming to and from the Getty are also required to wear a cloth face covering while in transit and on site. Please continue to wear it throughout your work day at the Getty.

Important Reminder about Timekeeping

Throughout these unprecedented times, it is still necessary to maintain accurate timecards. It’s important that non-exempt staff working remotely record their actual hours worked and meal periods on their timecards. Please follow the directions in the attached PDF to ensure you are recording your hours correctly and using the proper codes, even if you are unable to work remotely or are short your regularly scheduled hours.

Home WiFi Troubleshooting

As we work remotely, many of us are experiencing problems with our home wifi. It might be your computer, your Wi-Fi, or the types and sizes of files you’re sending or retrieving. Attached are a few troubleshooting tips you can try.

Website and Social Media Views Increase

Since the Getty Center and Villa closed to the public, visitors to the Getty website and social media channels have surged. The Getty's website views from March 31 to April 6 increased 132% compared to the same week last year, and the number of brand-new visitors to the website increased 151%. International views grew from 33% of total traffic last year to 42% of total traffic this year. In addition, shares of Getty's digital content on social media jumped from 36,800 shares in February to 241,000 shares in March. Several online posts contributed to the traffic increase, including the viral “recreate art” challenge.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Many Getty staff have seen or met Dr. Steven Jones and Lori Nelson from Jones & Associates, Inc. (otherwise known as JONES), who are supporting us in this essential initiative. If you have not yet met Dr. Jones or would like to learn more about Jones & Associates’ perspective regarding this difficult time, you might appreciate this video message that Dr. Jones has created for his clients. In another video, Dr. Jones speaks to a very relevant topic about respecting boundaries in online meetings, as we all become more accustomed to virtual connectivity. JONES anticipates being able to provide a series of vignettes regarding DEI in this time of working and connecting differently, focusing on using humor, expressing care, creating effective work environments, and other topics, which we will share with staff as they become available.

New Associate Director for the Foundation

Anne Helmreich will join the Getty Foundation as Associate Director effective April 20. Anne will transition from her current role as Associate Director of Digital Initiatives at the GRI, where she has overseen the Getty Vocabulary Program, the Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance, and the Digital Art History Program, and shaped the GRI’s scholarly research agenda in digital applications, including the use of big data and computational analysis. Anne is no stranger to philanthropy, having served as a Senior Program Officer in the Foundation from 2011 to 2015. During that time, Anne oversaw the Connecting Art Histories and Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiatives, among others. Anne also currently co-chairs the Getty’s DEI Council, and will continue in that role.

EVENTS

Laura Owens on the Materiality of Abstraction

Laura Owens, a Los Angeles-based artist with a radically innovative approach to painting, was featured in the latest installment of GCI's Artist Dialogue video series, which engages artists in conversations exploring their art, materials, fabrication processes, working methods, and conservation. Describing herself as an abstract painter who uses figuration as a formal device, Owens has consistently been questioning and pushing the boundaries of painting with a refreshing irreverence. Watch the video here.

Drawing with your Kids

Education Specialist Rebecca Edwards helps parents at home with tips for drawing with kids. Whether you’re an experienced artist or someone who rarely picks up a pencil, you can see your world through a new lens by drawing—and also have some fun while you’re at it, she says. Concerned your drawings may not be very good? No worries—it’s a great opportunity to model persistence and patience for your children.
