A Guide to the Description of Architectural Drawings

Groups/Items Categories:

Method of Representation/Point of View

Method/View Description
Method/View (Broad)
Method/View (Narrow)

These categories describe how an image was constructed in both broad and narrow senses. Method of Representation and Point of View are combined in this section of categories since they are so closely related as to be often indistinguishable:

Method of Representation is the established convention or projective technique used to make an image, such as plan, section, elevation.

Point of View is an indication of the position of a real or imaginary viewer relative to the subject depicted, such as bird's-eye perspective

The information recorded in these categories addresses the question of how the subject is depicted, regardless of what is depicted. In other words, the method of representation and point of view are independent of the subject. All images have a method of representation or a point of view, and sometimes both. A drawing may have more than one of either, as when it combines a plan, section, and elevation.

The information in these categories should reflect the hierarchical relationship between broad and narrow levels, unless this relationship is provided through use of a thesaurus. For example, Method/View (Broad) is the level for perspectives and axonometric projections, while Method/View (Narrow) is the level for bird's-eye perspectives and cutaway axonometric projections. In addition, the note category, METHOD/VIEW DESCRIPTION, can be used to record significant features of the method of representation or point of view, e.g., bird's-eye perspective from the southwest.

Category: Method/View Description

Definition:
Descriptive or explanatory note concerning the method of representation and point of view of a subject or subjects.

Discussion:
This category allows for free-text description when individual index terms do not fully capture the method of representation.

Examples:

Plan and laid-out internal wall elevations for an alternative design

Bank Street and Gloucester Street elevations

Fixture plan, ground floor

Implementation:
descriptive
optional
single occurrence

Category: Method/View (Broad)

Definition:
A broad term for the method of representation and/or point of view of a subject or subjects.

Discussion:
Allows for retrieval by broad terms. There may be more than one method or view in a given group or item.

Terminology:
When using the AAT, broad terms may be taken from the Visual Works (VC) hierarchy [drawings by method of representation]. [1] The terminology that can be used includes

elevations, cutaway drawings, scale drawings, axonometric drawings, oblique drawings, orthographic drawings, plans, profiles, sections, perspective drawings, sketches, views

Implementation:
access point
terminology-controlled
optional
repeatable

Category: Method/View (Narrow)

Definition:
A narrow term for the method of representation and/or point of view of a subject or subjects.

Discussion:
Queries by Method/View (Broad) will result in the retrieval of large numbers of entries, because there are relatively few broad terms. This category allows for retrieval at a narrower, more specific level.

Examples:

METHOD/VIEW (BROAD):

perspective

METHOD/VIEW (NARROW):

sotto in su

Terminology:
Careful consideration must be given to devising the vocabularies for this category. When using the AAT, terms may be taken from the Visual Works (VC) hierarchy [drawings by method of representation]. [2]

Examples:

bird's-eye perspectives, full-scale drawings, cabinet oblique drawings, half elevations, block plans, planting plans, piling plans, reflected ceiling plans, half-breadth plans, one-point perspectives

Implementation:
access point
terminology-controlled
optional
repeatable
