The Edible Monument: The Art of Food for Festivals

Opens October 13, 2015 | The Getty Center
In early modern Europe, festivals and celebrations were ornamented with large-scale, edible sculpture. From street feasts for civic occasions to delicate designs of sugar and fruit at court, these decorations were often used as propaganda to convey personal and political messages. Drawn from the GRI's Festival Collection, this exhibition features rare cookbooks and prints depicting the construction and consumption of these feasts and their symbolic place at the table.

Curators will lead gallery tours in October on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.

The Edible Monument: The Art of Food for Festivals

Edited by Marcia Reed
Elaborate and intricate, sculptures and architecture constructed with edible material were à la mode for celebratory events in early modern Europe. Designs crafted for festivals—including Carnival and Cuccagna—were feasts for the eyes and stomach, but were often left undocumented due to their perishable nature. This volume accompanies the exhibition The Edible Monument: The Art of Food for Festivals, and includes essays and illustrations depicting the methods, materials, and meaning behind these culinary feats.
