Yvonne Rainer: Dances and Films

May 27–October 12, 2014 | The Getty Center

One of the most influential artistic figures of the last 50 years, dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer impacted multiple movements: minimalism, conceptual art, feminist art, and postmodernism. This exhibition surveys Rainer's major performance and film works and includes an array of photographs, scores, journals, and posters, as well as a complete retrospective of Rainer's avant-garde films.

This exhibition grew out of the 2013 Getty Black Book project, in which more than 150 of LA's leading graffiti and tattoo artists were invited to respond to a 16th-century liber amicorum (book of friends) by contributing works on paper that were bound into a single book, the LA Liber Amicorum. Co-curated by the GRI's David Brafman and several of the original artists, the exhibition features a full-gallery "open black book" installation, as well as several of the GRI's rare books and manuscripts.

Newly Acquired Liber Amicorum

Compiled between 1587 and 1612, this liber amicorum (book of friends) includes allegorical, emblematic, and armorial paintings, poetry, and mottoes written in calligraphy, and figural watercolors based on Ottoman miniature paintings. The decorative papers in the manuscript reveal a far wider range of the Islamic papermaking arts than can be found in any contemporary European liber amicorum.

GRI Publications Receive Awards

Overdrive: LA Constructs the Future, 1940–1990 and Chatting with Henri Matisse: The Lost 1941 Interview each received a 2014 IPPY from the Independent Publisher Book Awards. Overdrive was awarded a gold medal for Best Regional Non-Fiction in the Pacific West and Chatting with Henri Matisse received a bronze medal in the National Fine Art category.

Erich and Luise Mendelsohn Letters, 1910–1953

Digital Archive

This archive makes available online more than 11,000 pages of digitized, transcribed, and searchable correspondence between world-renowned architect Erich Mendelsohn and his wife, Luise Mendelsohn. The project is a collaboration between the GRI and the Kunstbibliothek—Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, with 1,410 letters from Erich Mendelsohn contributed by the Kunstbibliothek and 1,328 letters from Luise Mendelsohn, part of the Erich and Luise Mendelsohn Papers, contributed by the GRI.
